The current generation Audi A3 is sold as a sedan and a convertible in the US and a hatchback model can also be had only on the plug-in hybrid e-tron model, though it hasn't been continued for the 2019 model year. In the US, the current A3 arrived for the 2015 model year, so it stands to reason that a new model should be in the works.

While SUVs are quickly taking over as the preferred body style in the US, Audi still managed to sell over 31,000 units of the A3 and S3 in 2016 and over 23,000 units in 2017. We don't know when the next A3/S3 will arrive in the US but our spy photographers just captured images of the new car testing in the snow.

The car is still wearing a camouflaged wrap but we can see a family resemblance to the recently revealed Audi A1. Of course, this prototype is a hatchback, so it likely won't be sold in the US. We'll have to wait for Audi to start testing the sedan version of the car, although a Sportback design has also been rumored. We have also noticed the quad exhaust pipes, an Audi S model signature, around the back of the car. This makes us believe this prototype is, in fact, an S3 rather than an A3.

These spy shots have also given us a look at the car's interior. The angle is a bit odd but we can see a driver-oriented cockpit with what appears to be a new touchscreen interface. Audi has introduced its new dual touchscreen interface on models like the A6, A7, and A8, so we wouldn't be surprised if the layout trickles down to the A3/S3.

Engine options are still unknown, though we expect a range of turbocharged four-cylinders, a plug-in hybrid variant, and possibly a fully electric version. The sedan bodystyle should arrive after the hatchback, though it is still unsure whether or not Audi will continue to build a convertible version.
