The teaser campaign for the brand-new Mini John Cooper Works GP has only just begun, but our spies have already caught a camouflaged prototype being loaded on a trailer, giving us a first look at the new hardcore hot hatch in full. As expected, the production model takes its cues from the racy John Cooper Works Concept shown at the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show that was essentially a Mini on steroids.

Despite the camouflage, it's clear that this will be one mean-looking Mini. It already looks noticeably more aggressive than the previous model thanks to its ginormous rear wing, deeper front spoiler, wider fenders, and massive wheels. Lightweight materials and the removal of the rear seat should also result in further weight reductions, while bigger brakes and retuned suspension should make the new John Cooper Works GP even more fun and rewarding to drive than a regular Mini, which is no small feat.

The automaker has now confirmed the 2020 JCW GP will be the fastest and most powerful Mini ever made for the road packing a turbocharged four-cylinder that produces over 300 hp, which should make it a formidable rival to the Volkswagen Golf R. That makes it significantly more powerful than its predecessor, which was limited to just 2,000 units and had 215 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque on tap.

Production of the new performance-focused Mini John Cooper Works GP will be limited to just 3,000 units, and if the previous models are anything to go by, it will likely sell out long before it goes on sale in 2020. Mini is currently testing the new John Cooper Works GP on the track, so a full reveal shouldn't be too far away now that the official teaser campaign has started. Hopefully, we'll see it break cover at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show next month.
