Back in the summer, we got our first look at the new BMW M4 Convertible, so it was only a matter of time before BMW started testing the new M4 Coupe. We've also seen the regular next-generation BMW 4 Series Coupe being tested, but now we can finally share the first spy shots of the new BMW M4 Coupe, which was spotted being loaded onto a transport truck in preparation for testing.

The M4 Coupe prototype is heavily camouflaged but shares the same design cues as the recent M3 prototype. BMW wants the BMW 4 Series, M4, and M3 to look distinctly different from the 3 Series, and that means they will have a significantly larger kidney grille inspired by the controversial BMW 4 Concept.

Flared fenders, larger wheels, and a quad exhaust system also indicate we're looking at the hot M version of the 4 Series. Previous spy shots of the new 4 Series have shown the cabin will look similar to the 3 Series in contrast to the radical exterior, featuring the same dashboard design, a central 8.8-inch touchscreen, a digital gauge cluster, and a center console with rotary controls to control BMW's iDrive system.

Under the hood, the new M3 and M4 will be powered by the same 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder found in the X3 M and X4 M. The base M3 and M4 models will have 473 horsepower, while the hardcore Competition models will reportedly produce 503 horsepower.

The base version is expected to be offered with rear-wheel drive and the Competition version will feature an all-wheel-drive system that can be switched to rear-wheel drive like in the M5. Thankfully, the new BMW M3 and M4 won't ditch the manual transmission, but it may only be offered in the base models.

Sadly, we still have a long time to wait for the new M3 and M4 to break cover. BMW M boss Markus Flasch recently confirmed the new M3 and M4 won't go into production until late 2020 and launch in early 2021.
